“We really do put people first,” says Cathy Graham, executive vice president at Desert Financial Credit Union, one of the Best Places to Work in Arizona. “The employment environment is really tough right now with the Great Resignation. So we try to be really purposeful and clear about the organization: where we’re going, what we’re striving for, what success looks like and then connecting the dots. People want to feel like part of something bigger than just the role that they fill every day.”

MAINTAINING CULTURE: “When we interview candidates, we talk with them about their qualifications and capabilities, but we also ask them what they do for fun” says Robert Cortazzo, Southwest division president for Adolfson & Peterson Construction. “We try to gauge what their personalities are. We try to gauge in great depth how they will fit in within the organization. We’ve made a decision that no matter how much we need staff — whether it be superintendents or project managers or estimators — the one thing we’re going to do is hire based on skill and culture. If the cultural fit isn’t there, if we don’t think it’s somebody that is going to help add to the dynamics and the fun nature that we try to bring to the A&P workplace culture, we’re not going to hire that person.”
FAMILY FIRST: “Something that really attracted me to A&P was the family nature of the business — it’s family first and foremost,” Cortazzo says. “Typically, on our executive calls or in our team meetings, people will talk about what’s going on in their lives, what’s happening with their families. I think because of that, it’s a very caring organization, both internally and externally. There are a lot of companies out there that do the work that we do, but I think what really differentiates A&P is the culture that we have and the approach that we take with our staff, with our clients and with our team members and partners in business.
