Each year, Ranking Arizona magazine conducts the state’s biggest and most comprehensive business opinion poll. Ranking Arizona is based purely on opinion and ranks companies based on how voters answer this simple question: “With whom would you recommend doing business?” Each year, some of the categories that attract the most voters include categories focused on the best places to work in Arizona, the best places to live, and the companies with the best workplace culture.

Workplace culture has never been more important than it is in 2021, so Az Business analyzed the results of the Ranking Arizona voting and compiled a list of the “100 Best Places to Live and Work in Arizona for 2021.” These are the 100 companies and cities that got the most votes. The companies and cities are listed in alphabetical order. Over the next several weeks, we will spotlight some of the best places to work in Arizona with video interviews featuring company leaders, including Mike Brown, Arizona regional president for WaFd Bank.
WaFd Bank Arizona
What the company does: WaFd Bank is a full-service national banking institution that focuses on business-to-business banking, commercial and equipment lending, as well as home loan and corporate real estate financing.
Inside the company culture: “To me, workplace culture is critically, critically important,” says Mike Brown, Arizona regional president for WaFd Bank. “When I’m actually interviewing potential candidates for come to work for WaFd bank, I always stress the culture. Somebody could make a couple thousand dollars more here or there, but if you don’t settle for a great culture, you’re not going to be a happy camper. So culture is critically important with us and we do a lot of things to promote our company culture.”
Source of pride: “The thing that gives me the most pride came out about four years ago from our CEO, Brent J. Beardall,” Brown says. “He came out with a motto that honestly hit me right in the heart. And it was, ‘Love what you do … make a difference. ‘And I thought that was absolutely perfect because when it’s coming from the top, it cascades down to everybody.”
