The Arizona Department of Housing has awarded the Foundation for Senior Living, or FSL, more than $3.9 million to build a second property—this one at 21st and Missouri avenues in Phoenix—in collaboration with First Place AZ. FSL and First Place will work with triARC Architecture & Design to develop 19 affordable, intergenerational units and six units for young adults with autism to live independently. Construction is scheduled to begin this fall, with a 12-month build-out.
The two-bedroom, high-energy-efficient units will be built with no volatile organic chemicals. The buildings and environment will offer lower density lighting and are designed to include sound suppression for noise reduction in the units, silent dishwashers, plumbing, refrigerators and HVAC. The campus will be secure for all residents.
“We opened our first collaborative property, 29 Palms, at 49th and Holly streets in Phoenix in June 2014 and it’s been very well received by the community,” says Steve Hastings, director of real estate services at FSL. “It has become a great home to our FSL residents and created the opportunity for wonderful new relationships between our seniors and First Place Transition Academy participants.”

FSL will begin lease-up six months prior to construction completion. First Place AZ will administer the leases on the six units for adults with autism. More details on how to apply will be available in the coming months.
