Abrazo Mesa Hospital, a new type of “neighborhood” hospital for the East Valley, will open at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1, hospital officials announced today.

Located at 5750 E. Baseline Rd., Abrazo Mesa Hospital is licensed for eight inpatient beds and offers 24-hour emergency care as well as the ability to perform surgical procedures with around-the-clock general surgery, hospitalist and emergency physician coverage.

Designed as a neighborhood hospital focused on quality medical care, convenience and efficiency, the facility is smaller in scale than a typical general hospital. Like its larger Abrazo sister hospitals, it will include a surgical suite, diagnostic imaging, laboratory and other services.

Patients with abdominal pain, sprains and broken bones, cardiac arrhythmias, seizures, minor trauma, lacerations, bladder infections, dehydration, pneumonia and flu are typical of illnesses expected to be treated in the Abrazo Mesa Hospital emergency department.

“We’re anxious to begin providing care for our neighbors and friends,” said Christy Matlock, RN, administrative director for Abrazo Mesa Hospital. “Providing quality medical care and improved patient satisfaction are among our top priorities, and we want our ER waiting times to be among the shortest they can possibly be.”

Matlock, a resident of nearby Gilbert, added, “We have been working hard to create a culture of a patient-friendly, efficient environment with a consumer-focused orientation.”

Over the past few weeks, all areas of the hospital participated in training for its Oct. 1 opening. Admitting, nurses, radiology, transporters, food service, housekeeping and security all tested processes and procedures. Many staff played mock patients, and patient simulators included life-size figures.

Approximately 100 people attended a Sept. 19 dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony with East Valley officials, community leaders and hospital staff.

Abrazo Mesa Hospital is creating approximately 50 full-time equivalent clinical and support staff jobs. A similar Abrazo neighborhood hospital is under construction in Surprise and expected to open in 2020.

“This is a new model for bringing healthcare closer to the communities we serve. It’s a beautiful facility and I am very proud of our team rolling up their sleeves and working hard to prepare for opening day. We look forward to caring for patients very soon,” said Interim CEO Ed Staren.

Abrazo Health operates hospitals, primary care and specialty physician practices and other services throughout the greater Phoenix area. The new hospital is designed to provide close integration with its sister facilities.
