The data shows that Arizona recorded the third-highest rate of cyclist deaths at intersections between 2019 and 2023.

The research by Bicycle Accident Lawyers Group analyzed data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Crash Report Sampling System on pedalcyclist fatalities at intersections from 2019 to 2023. The number of fatalities was calculated per million residents in each state to identify where cyclists face the greatest danger while waiting at or crossing intersections.

Arizona ranks third with an average of 2.11 fatalities per million residents, 122.1% higher than the national average of 0.95 fatalities per million residents. The Grand Canyon State recorded an average of 15.4 pedal cyclist fatalities at intersections annually between 2019 and 2023 among its population of 7,306,451. The state saw its highest fatality count in 2022 with 21 deaths, while 2020 recorded the lowest with 9 deaths.

Looking at the study, a spokesperson at Bicycle Accident Lawyers Group commented:

“The findings show that intersection safety for cyclists has become a critical public safety issue. Arizona is seeing far higher fatality rates, suggesting that infrastructure design, driver behavior, and enforcement policies may not adequately protect vulnerable road users at intersections.

“These patterns may reflect increased cyclist traffic, inadequate intersection design, poor visibility, or a lack of protected bike lanes at crossings.”

Methodology

The study analyzed data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Crash Report Sampling System (CRSS) covering pedalcyclist fatalities at intersections from 2019 to 2023. Fatalities were averaged over the five-year period and calculated per million residents in each state to identify where cyclists face the greatest danger at intersections.
