Amilyn Pierce, vice president, Government Affairs, Arizona Diamondbacks

BACKGROUND: Amilyn Pierce is in her fifth season as vice president of Government Affairs for the Arizona Diamondbacks, overseeing all government relations, DE&I and Sustainability initiatives for the team. Pierce’s 23-year career in politics and government spans three states (Arizona, Oregon and Washington) and her experience includes candidate and initiative campaign management, policy work and legislative senior staff.

CAREER PATH INSPIRATION: “Participating in the Kids Voting project in junior high sparked my interest in politics but watching the West Wing really got me excited about government. I loved the fast-paced environment and people impacting change — I was hooked. I didn’t know combining government and sports was an option but I’ve always been a huge baseball fan. When the chance to combine two things I love and know well presented itself, my dream job was born.”

SOURCE OF PRIDE: “Working with a coalition including sports organizations, Native American tribes, the Arizona state legislature and the governor’s office to update the gaming compact and legalize sports betting in the state is one of my proudest professional accomplishments. Our approach to sports gaming has become a model that other states emulate, and the professional coalitions that have turned into personal friendships make being involved with this historic legislation even more rewarding.”

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION: “Derrick Hall at the D-backs and Michael Hunter and J.D. Mesnard at the Arizona Legislature have done much to further my career — valuing my contributions and opinions while creating a safe place to ask questions and learn. Derrick continues to give me new responsibilities and I’ve grown and been challenged more in the last four years than at any other time in my career. These men have also allowed me to be the mom I want to be, encouraging and supporting my family goals in addition to my professional goals. I will be forever grateful to them.”

SURPRISING FACT: “I developed a peanut allergy later in life after I had a baby, who is also allergic to peanuts! The allergy was diagnosed right about the time I got a job at a baseball stadium, a place where peanuts are a staple. What are the odds?! Good news: we’ve never had an issue.”
