ATTRACTION TO INDUSTRY: “Modern architecture first caught my eye as a child in Germany. I noticed from a young age that these iconic buildings were too often torn down to make way for “new and improved” architecture. Finding a way to reimagine and save the modern designs of my youth impassioned me to become a designer.”
SOURCE OF PRIDE: “I think it’s connected to learning. So the thing I’m most proud of as a professional accomplishment, I would say is, related to teaching, which is closely related to learning. And it is really about empowering others. I taught at MIT for a few years. That was an experience that I really cherished. Because I could see really young, talented women grow up into these amazing professionals, into these amazing leaders. The most wonderful compliment for me always was when they would see me later, maybe on the subway or maybe at an event, and they would recount something that I told them as something that I helped them with that made a difference to them.”
SURPRISING FACT: “Well, there are a few things. But a very one of the most surprising ones might be that I was actually born and raised in Germany. I have a German mother and an English father. So none of those accents actually exist anymore. But one of the things that I don’t get enough time to do anymore, but would love to do more, is actually build boats. I built a kayak by myself from plans, which was a really fun experience. And again, it gave me a chance to learn..”
