Today’s spotlight: Brittney Griner

All-star center

Phoenix Mercury

Background: Griner is a six-time WNBA All-Star (2019, 2018, 2017, 2015, 2014 and 2013) and was the league’s leading scorer in 2019 and 2017 — the only true center in WNBA history to lead the league in scoring. She holds the WNBA regular-season records for blocks in a single game (11), blocks in a season (129, 2014), single-season blocks average (4.04, 2015) and career blocks average (3.0). Griner also has 12 career regular-season dunks, one playoff dunk and five All-Star Game dunks.

Professional advice: “It’s a process, and takes a lot of hard work and dedication. You don’t become a leader overnight. You have to be willing to put in the extra work and go hard every day. Let your output speak for you rather than what others may say.”

Lesson learned in 2020: “I’ve really been able to learn how to work better people over the last year. Being a good leader, knowing how to connect with different backgrounds, people and demographics really help. When you know how to connect with someone, you learn how to motivate them and bring out the best in that person.”

Surprising fact: “A fun fact about me is I’m actually super OCD. When I do straighten up and when I do clean my house, I make sure everything is even. Everything has to be orderly and put in place. Whether it’s from biggest to smallest, color-coordinated, the size or the shape, I’ll move the whole house around just to make it look perfect and clean.”
