Today’s spotlight: Debbie Shumway
CEO
Hospice of the Valley
Background: Shumway leads one of the largest not-for-profit hospices in the nation, with 1,500 staff caring for 5,000 patients needing palliative, dementia, home-based primary care and end-of-life care. Under her leadership, the agency has built partnerships with healthcare systems to meet community needs and provide a safety net for the most vulnerable. Shumway has devoted 26 years to providing comfort, dignity and compassionate care.
Professional advice: “Jump in with both feet – discover and experience different areas within your organization. Work hard, be curious and learn from a mentor you admire. Always be passionate about serving others.”
Lesson learned in 2020: “I have learned that constant and consistent communication is vital to understanding employee needs – especially when facing new uncertainties as we are now. I value each employee’s perspective and use that knowledge to grow and support our mission.”
Surprising fact: “I love to travel and drag my family to every famous and obscure site I can find. I call that a vacation – they may not agree.”
