Jenna Borcherding, director of development, VanTrust Real Estate

BACKGROUND: As Director of Development for the VanTrust Phoenix office, Jenna Borcherding is responsible for the identification, evaluation and execution of industrial, office and mixed-use development opportunities throughout the Southwest. In just four years, her portfolio of development projects in Arizona and Nevada has surpassed 3.8 million square feet. Borcherding has been actively involved with NAIOP Arizona since 2012, facilitating a mentor program, serving as chairwoman of the Developing Leader’s Group and was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2022. Amid having her second child, she was named to the Phoenix Business Journal’s 2022 Class of 40 under 40. Passionate about guiding the next generation of professionals in commercial real estate, Borcherding frequently speaks on panels and provides mentoring to those looking to get into the industry.

CAREER PATH INSPIRATION: “I entered the commercial real estate industry in 2011 and after working at DLR Architects, Jokake Construction and JLL, I set my sights on development. I was attracted to the tangible nature of development, where you can see and feel the impact our developments have on the communities in which we develop.”

SOURCE OF PRIDE: “Taking a leap of faith and making a career change just as I was about to have my first son. As a new mom, I was not only faced with a learning curve at home, but at the office as well as I transitioned to the development side of commercial real estate. It’s incredibly fulfilling to look back on the last four years and point to more than a dozen projects that we’ve developed in that time across Arizona and Nevada.”

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION: “This one is easy: Keith Earnest! We met over 10 years ago, thanks to Sam Fox. Over the years, I relied on Keith’s insight and expertise as I navigated a career in commercial real estate. Then as I was about to have my first son (Rocky), he offered me the opportunity of a lifetime. After a nice long maternity leave, I joined VanTrust and the rest is history.”

SURPRISING FACT: “I am a dual citizen of the United States and New Zealand. My mom is from New Zealand, which is where most of my family resides. It’s a haul, but an incredibly beautiful country and a great place to have family!”
