Sara Gordon, managing director, JPMorgan Private Bank

BACKGROUND: Over the past 40 years, Sara Gordon has had a very rewarding career in banking. She co-founded a de-novo bank, worked with multinationals, originated SBA loans and managed a team of commercial bankers. She’s currently a managing director with the J.P. Morgan Private Bank where she provides high-net-worth families bespoke customized credit solutions.

CAREER PATH INSPIRATION: “Banking combines my passion for people, relationships, analytics and problem-solving. I joined Union Bank when I graduated from college, thinking I’d stay in banking for just a few years! Fast forward four decades and I’m still thrilled to be working in the industry and learning new things on a daily basis.”

SOURCE OF PRIDE: “At the top of my list are my clients and colleagues. I’m working with the third generation of many of my clients. And, my colleagues inspire and teach me on a daily basis. My philanthropic contributions are also a source of pride — most recently, working with Goodwill Industries, Phoenix Art Museum and GPCC Foundation.”

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION: “I have to credit my alma mater, Smith College, with empowering me with the confidence to truly believe that ‘women can do anything that men can do.’ I’ve also had many wonderful mentors and colleagues who have given me opportunities and challenges that opened doors for new experiences and professional growth.”

SURPRISING FACT: “I interviewed with the CIA as a political analyst and went to Langley three times for interviews. It does look just like the movies! The entire process took about six months and was absolutely fascinating. I didn’t get the job, but I’ll always remember the experience fondly.”
