Subway Restaurants of Arizona will serve as the title sponsor for the first-ever Quizbowl Arizona, a tournament-style educational contest in partnership with KASW-TV Your Phoenix CW featuring teams made up of students from local high schools.  The single elimination tournament – set up much like the NCAA basketball tournament in brackets – will be aired weekly as a half-hour local television series on Your Phoenix CW on Sunday nights at 7 p.m. weekly through May 13.

KISS-FM’s Rich Berra of the Johnjay and Rich Show will serve as host of the series. Each week, students will earn prizes through the competition, and the winners will earn scholarships to help them with higher education costs – not to mention a party, courtesy of Subway.

“When we heard that Your Phoenix CW had teamed up with the Arizona Quizbowl Association to increase awareness of the importance of education in Arizona and to highlight, challenge and reward the community’s best and brightest, we jumped at the chance to be involved,” said Chad Barnett, a local father and Subway franchisee. “Locally, we already have a charitable arm focused on helping kids who are doing random acts of kindness in schools called Cycle for Success, so it is a natural extension for us to also help reward academic achievements, too.”

Schools participating in the first-ever Arizona Quizbowl include Hamilton, Basis Scottsdale, Basis Chandler, Paradise Valley, Desert Vista, Millennium, Moon Valley, Mesquite, Orme, Corona del Sol and Westwood.

“Our hope is to grow this to a statewide competition with hundreds of teens from schools across Arizona over the next several years,” said Traci Wilkinson, vice president and general manager of Your Phoenix CW.  “Arizona Quizbowl is one way we can honor and showcase the academic achievements of the next generation of leaders needed to transform our community.”
