Phoenix residents may soon hear a new sound overhead — the buzz of delivery drones bringing everything from cold medicine and groceries to forgotten household essentials straight to their driveway or backyard in as little as 30 minutes. Phoenix has been selected as one of seven major U.S. metro areas joining what Walmart and Alphabet-owned Wing call the nation’s largest drone delivery network, expanding a service designed to make ultra-fast delivery part of everyday life. The announcement positions Phoenix among a growing group of cities where drone technology is transforming how residents shop and receive essentials.

The expansion means eligible Phoenix-area residents will soon gain access to tens of thousands of Walmart products through the Wing app, including over-the-counter medications, last-minute grocery items, electronics and household necessities. Customers will also be able to access the delivery option through Walmart’s website and app once service becomes available in their area.
Wing’s delivery drones can travel at speeds of up to 60 mph and use a tether system to gently lower packages to a customer’s property — whether a driveway or backyard — without landing. The company says deliveries can arrive in as fast as 30 minutes, offering a new level of convenience for shoppers facing last-minute needs.
“Customers expect their orders on their terms, delivered with speed and ease,” said Greg Cathey, senior vice president of eCommerce Fulfillment Transformation for Walmart U.S. “Expanding into new markets with Wing allows us to provide an innovative delivery option for customers, utilizing our vast store network to make everyday shopping and fulfilling last-minute needs just a little bit easier.”
Phoenix joins Memphis, New Orleans, Philadelphia, San Diego, the San Francisco Bay Area and Salt Lake City in the latest phase of expansion. Together, the new markets will help Walmart and Wing grow their footprint to nearly 20 U.S. metros, with a goal of reaching 40 million consumers by 2027.
Wing says the expansion builds on momentum from more than 1 million commercial drone deliveries already completed in cities including Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston and Atlanta.
