20 best U.S. cities for retirement includes 2 from Arizona

Arizona has long been a magnet for retirees seeking sunshine and an active lifestyle, and a new national study suggests several cities across the state remain attractive destinations for Americans entering their golden years.

Scottsdale ranks No. 4 among the best cities to retire in the United States, according to WalletHub’s 2026 analysis of 182 cities. Tempe also cracked the national top 20 at No. 17, while Chandler ranked No. 49 and Tucson came in at No. 55.

Phoenix ranked No. 76, followed by Peoria at No. 90, Gilbert at No. 94, Glendale at No. 100 and Mesa at No. 117.

The findings come as retirement security remains a concern for many Americans. According to data cited by WalletHub, 61% of workers are somewhat confident they will have enough money to retire comfortably, but only 21% are very confident. Many expect to continue working in some capacity after retiring.

Why Scottsdale stands out for retirees

Scottsdale earned an overall score of 58.87, trailing only Orlando, Miami and Tampa. Casper, Wyoming, rounded out the national top five.

Scottsdale’s greatest strength was quality of life, where it ranked No. 1 in the nation. It also ranked No. 18 for activities and No. 35 for healthcare. Affordability proved to be its biggest weakness, with Scottsdale ranking No. 114 in that category.

Tempe also performed particularly well in quality of life, ranking No. 14 nationally, along with No. 30 for healthcare. Chandler ranked even higher for quality of life at No. 4 nationally, helping the East Valley community secure its No. 49 overall position.

What makes a retirement-friendly city?

WalletHub compared 182 cities across 45 metrics divided into four categories: affordability, activities, quality of life and healthcare. Each category accounted for 25 points in the overall evaluation.

The analysis went well beyond cost of living. Researchers considered taxpayer friendliness, retirement-income taxation and costs for in-home and adult day healthcare. Quality-of-life measurements included mild weather, walkability, crime, air and water quality, transit access and the percentage of residents 65 and older.

Healthcare factors included access to physicians, gerontologists, nurses and physical therapists, along with healthcare facilities, hospital quality, home-care availability and life expectancy.

Those criteria highlight both Arizona’s advantages and challenges as a retirement destination. While several Valley communities score strongly for quality of life, the rankings show affordability can present a hurdle. Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler, Phoenix, Peoria and Gilbert all ranked No. 114 for affordability in the study.

Still, with Scottsdale ranking among the nation’s top five and Tempe among the top 20, Arizona continues to demonstrate why it remains a compelling destination for retirees looking beyond finances alone and weighing lifestyle, recreation, healthcare and overall quality of life.
