New research by BetArizona.com reveals which states are looking to get fit this January by analyzing Google search volumes. Massachusetts, Colorado, and New Jersey take the top three spots on the ranking of states with highest gym interest, while Arizona ranks No. 15.

Every year 38.5% of US adults set New Year’s resolutions. Getting into the gym is one of the most popular resolutions, with 48% of Americans wanting to exercise more in 2023[1]… but which states are actually looking to get fit this January and burn off the extra holiday weight?
To find out, the team at BetArizona.com has ranked each US state based on the number of Google Searches around the search term ‘”gyms near me”, during the month of January.
With larger populated cities naturally having more overall searches, the ranking is based on searches per 10,000 of the population.
Residents of Massachusetts Top the List
Massachusetts ranked number one with 153 searches per 10,000, witnessing a 41% year-on-year increase. Colorado came in a close second with 152.2 searches per 10,000.
A study [2] found that Colorado has the lowest rate of obesity, with only 24.2% overweight residents. Massachusetts, who ranked number one, was found to have the second-lowest number of overweight residents.
New Jersey (150.7), Florida (131.8) and Texas (121.8) round off the top five states looking to get fit in 2023. Texas while ranked 5th in searches for the gym, the recent study found Texas ranked 12th among obesity, with 25.70% of residents being overweight.
California had the greatest number of searches for gyms but compared to its population, the Golden State ranked 19th across the states.
