Many are familiar with the story of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” — but you haven’t seen it like this. Performed by the Drunk Shakespeare Society in the Rose Theater, Drunk Dracula retells the story of the Transylvanian with a 21+ twist. Before the show begins, one of the actors is selected to take five shots, bringing an audience member to join in on the toast to prove the liquor is legitimate. Once imbibed, the tale begins to unfold.
The host sets the scene, occasionally joining in as side characters, as the rest of the troupe performs the main roles of the production. The 90-minute show faithfully recounts the broad narrative of the literary classic, but with healthy dose of raunchy comedy, references to the genre and the Valley, and a climactic dance number. Beyond the players, the production quality is impressive, creating an immersive environment that is both spooky and fun.
The Rose Theater’s intimate environment means the actors are surrounded on all sides as they perform, who in turn engage with the patrons. If you are shy, don’t worry, most audience interactions came from volunteers.

For guests who prefer the finer things, two seats are available for a “Royal Experience” which includes a bottle of champagne, two cocktails, delicacies and the ability to influence the performance.
Twice during the show, the royals can ring a bell to halt the story and weigh in on whether the drunk actor is sufficiently tipsy by completing a challenge. Even if successful, these most distinguished guests hold the final decision on whether the actor needs another dose of liquid courage.
But you don’t need to be a count or countess to enjoy a tipple or two during the performance. Any guest can order from a menu of cocktails and small bites using the provided QR code or provided paper form. The servers put on an act of their own, weaving in and out of the theater with minimal disruption to the show.
Each performance features a different drunk actor, meaning no two will play out exactly the same. See for yourself — Drunk Dracula runs through November 15. Tickets are available here, and you can follow the troupe on Instagram @drunkshakespeare and @drunkdraculashow.
