Gilbert is the second-safest city in America among the 100 largest in the nation, according to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program’s 2019 report released this week.

These rankings are based on the total crimes per 1,000 residents.

The study shows that total crime in Gilbert decreased from 2018 to 2019, as did crimes per 1,000 residents. Gilbert saw a drop in the number of rapes, murders, thefts, arsons and other property crimes last year despite seeing a population increase of more than 6,000 residents.

Gilbert was the only Arizona city to rank inside the Top 15 of the nation’s 100 largest cities.

“Gilbert’s safe city ranking could not be possible without the department’s dedicated employees who serve and protect our community and the support, relationships and involvement of our residents,” Gilbert Police Chief Michael Soelberg said. “We will continue to work with our community and take a data-driven approach to proactively reduce crime and keep Gilbert safe for all.”

The FBI’s crime statistics are based on data received from 15,956 of 19,738 law enforcement agencies in the country.
