In Arizona, the three most-wanted affordable retail chains were:

1. Grocery Outlet Bargain Market

Grocery Outlet Bargain Market is Arizona’s most-wanted retail destination. It sells branded groceries at discounted prices, often because the products are surplus stock, discontinued, or use last season’s packaging. The selection changes frequently, so it is not always the place for a tightly planned shop. You may not find the particular coffee you came in for. You may, however, find a cheap wheel of cheese and decide that was the real priority.

2. Lidl

European giant Lidl is known for its low grocery prices, smaller stores and a bakery section that has developed a loyal following. Then there is the middle aisle. Its rotating selection of tools, clothing, kitchen equipment and seasonal goods means a shopper can go in for tomatoes and leave with ski gloves, a cordless screwdriver and no clear memory of how it happened.

The result is a discount supermarket that feels practical without being entirely predictable and makes the weekly grocery run a little less dull.

3. Meijer

Rounding up the top three of most-wanted budget retail stores among Arizonans came Meijer — or Meijers, if you’re from Michigan. Part supermarket, part department store, Meijer is the sort of place where shoppers can buy groceries, clothes, electronics, medicine and a new toaster without having to move the car. That scale is likely to be a big part of its appeal.
