Knowing that around 28 percent of the women are prone to harassment every year while traveling, a group of female travelers and journalists created a Women Danger Index and ranked World’s Most Dangerous Places (and safest) for Solo Female Travelers based on many criteria.
The researchers analyzed 50 of the most-visited countries in the world and came up with a guide for female travelers.
The study ranked countries for their level of danger based on many criteria, such as whether women are safe at walking at night, legal discrimination, etc. Each country was given a “Danger Grade” for each of the eight considerations and then ranked overall. The eight key criteria are:
• Non-partner sexual violence
• Intimate partner violence
• Legal discrimination
• Intentional homicide of women
• Violence against women attitudes
• Safe to walk alone at night?
• Global gender gap
• Gender equality
The ranking below shows that South Africa is, by far and away, the most dangerous place for a woman to travel alone.
