What is CBD used for? The simple answer, everything. As popularity increases, so does research. Before implementing CBD into your routine, you should know all that it can do for you.
What is CBD?
CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is the second most prevalent active ingredient in the cannabis plant, right behind delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBD is an essential component of medical marijuana, but it differs because it is derived from the hemp plant, which is a cousin to the marijuana plant. While CBD is a component of marijuana, it is important to note that it does not cause a “high,” that is often associated with the marijuana plant.
In a report conducted by the World Health Organization, it states, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential,” further, “to date, there is no evidence of public health-related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”
Is CBD a Drug?
The more popularity that CBD gains, the more people are concerned about the legality of the product. Is it a drug? Will it get you ‘high?” The answer is no.
Well, the answer is no if the CBD is pure. Which is where your responsibility as a CBD user comes in. With so many CBD options on the market, you should be prepared with how to determine which product is best for you.
Back in 2014, the Farm Bill was passed which allowed state governments the legal right to grow and research CBD under state-regulated programs. Due to the close relationship to marijuana, the hemp plant has long suffered from misperception and is often scrutinized. However, the Farm Bill determined that hemp-derived products with less than 0.3% THC were not classified as marijuana and were deemed legal.
In 2018, the Farm Bill was revised and legalized the production, consumption, and sale of CBD products in all 50 states. While this legality applied to hemp-derived CBD products with less than 0.3% THC, it did not however apply to CBD products that are marijuana-derived.
Keep in mind, that while federally legal, your state may have different laws prohibiting the purchase of CBD products. Before making a CBD purchase, you should know what the laws are in your state, to ensure that you are not making any illegal purchases.
Does CBD Get You High?
Unlike CBD’s close relative THC, you will not experience a “high” when using hemp-derived CBD products. CBD and THC are often confused as one another, but the effect each compound has on your body are drastically different. The common understanding of “high” from the cannabis plant is connected to THC. On the contrary, CBD is non-psychoactive and provides benefits of the cannabis plant without experiencing a “high.”
As more and more people learn about the healing properties of CBD, scientists and health experts have dedicated their research to determine the best ways to utilize the healing benefits of CBD. Oftentimes, they recommend people to consider using CBD as a safe and natural medicinal alternative. The future of medicine may include plenty of CBD!
CBD offers many therapeutic benefits but does not cause any intoxicating side effects, making it a first-choice for many that wish to experience the benefits of the cannabis plant without the high. CBD can be used topically, through ingestion, or both!
However, it is important to note that CBD is still undergoing vast research. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Currently, the only CBD product approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is a prescription oil called Epidiolex. It’s approved to treat two types of epilepsy.” Research is still underway determining if CBD is a potential treatment for numerous conditions including Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, anxiety, and more.
While the possible benefits seem to be endless, it’s important to speak to your doctor first to determine if CBD is a good fit for you and your wellness routine.
