The next time you’re shopping at Saks Fifth Avenue in Biltmore Fashion Park, you may notice a couple new additions — celebrity fashion designer and dress guru David Meister’s fall 2012 and signature collections. Whether you are walking the red carpet or enjoying a picnic on a warm, fall day, Meister has a dress that will flatter and suit you.
Meister says his fall 2012 collection will consist of a lot of shine, both metallic and sequins.
When describing his fall 2012 collection, Meister says there will be a lot of color, but dark, subtle colors. “There are still going to be touches of illusion and embroidery with the sequins, but it’s mostly really great, easy, clean shades.”
Known for using fabrics with ample stretch and give, Meister says an important aspect to keep in mind while designing is not only ensuring the garment looks great, but that it feels great as well.
“I think stretch and knit is so important because it’s more modern,” Meister says. “It’s comfortable, fits more body types, travels well, and it doesn’t wrinkle. I think very rigid clothing just doesn’t really suit or fit in with many women’s lives today.”
Speaking of suiting women, he has recently expanded his collections to include sizes 14W to 24W. Meister says some dresses work in larger sizes better than others; it’s all about finding the perfect fit — which is No. 1 on his list of styling tips.
“Fit is so important,” Meister stresses. “I always tell people that you can take a $10 dress, and if it’s altered beautifully to your body, it can look amazing. And you can take a $10,000 gown, and if it doesn’t fit, it looks like 10 bucks.”
No. 2 and No. 3 on his tip list include wearing the right undergarments and making sure you feel confident in what you are wearing, respectively.
“In order to look great, you have to feel great,” Meister says. “If someone is fidgeting and pulling at themselves, they are not going to look good because you can tell that they are not comfortable with themselves.”
These tips apply to everyone, including celebrities.
Meister has dressed countless celebrities, including Jane Lynch, Sofia Vergara, Viola Davis and many more. He says he wants his clients look and feel great and that his designs are timeless both on and off the red carpet.
“To me as a designer, something that is well designed should have a sense of classic-ness or timelessness to it,” Meister says. “So if the dress is beautiful now, you should be able to pull it out five years later, and it should still look beautiful and wearable.”
