The man behind popular projects such as Scottsdale Fashion Square, Chandler Fashion Square, Biltmore Fashion Park and The Boulders Resort, Rusty Lyon, passed away this month.

A Celebration of Life Service is planned for Lyon on Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. at Scottsdale Bible Church at 7601 E. Shea Blvd. in Scottsdale.

Lyon served at Westcor for more than 40-years as CEO, and worked as a leader in retail development, leaving behind a legacy that can be seen across Arizona. Westcor was eventually purchased by California-based Macerich in 2002.

Lyon was featured in 2011 as part of AZRE’s Centennial Series as one of the Most Influential People in Arizona Commercial Real Estate alongside visionaries like Frank Lloyd Wright.

Lyon was a proven businessman, having foresight to purchase property for development before it would reach peak value as early as the 1960s.

Some of his projects were brought to life within his office that is dubbed the “Lyons Den” that’s still at Macerich.

Many of Lyon’s innovative designs of urban villages are still being used in the Phoenix area today, and surrounding regions as a model for metropolitan planning.

Lyon also brought Metrocenter Mall, Flagstaff Mall & The Marketplace and Prescott Gateway Mall to life.
