All across the state — and nation — businesses are struggling to attract and retain employees.
But those companies may be able to learn something from the companies that are spotlighted on the pages to follow. The 100 Best Places to Live and Work in Arizona earned the most support in voting for the 2022 edition of Ranking Arizona, the state’s biggest business opinion poll.

“We really do put people first,” says Cathy Graham, executive vice president at Desert Financial Credit Union, one of the 100 Best Places to Work and Live in Arizona for 2022. “The employment environment is really tough right now with the Great Resignation. It’s hard to find people. Every business you go to, they’re trying to manage around staffing shortages.”
So what can businesses struggling with staffing issues or with defining their workplace culture learn from the 100 Best Places to Live and Work in Arizona?
“It starts with experience,” says says Gabrielle Finley-Hazle, CEO of Dignity Health Arizona Central and West Valley Market, and CommonSpirit Health, one of the Best Places to Work in Arizona. “It’s not just patient experience and family experience, but it’s the human experience. I think as people pause — and instead of just focusing on employee experience or the patient experience — if you really focus on the entire human experience, it will shift the culture of your organization. You want to be able to know, ‘Hey, when I come and visit, it’s not just saying hello, but it might be saying, Hey, I know that you like to have a Kind bar, so I’m going to make sure there’s a Kind bar at your desk, and I’m going to say welcome, today.’ It’s the little things that create an impact on someone’s experience, but also the human experience.”
Coming out of the uncertainty of the pandemic and the workplace issues that accompanied it, those little things loom larger than ever. Also looming large, Graham says, is the necessity for employees to see leadership in action.
“I think so many times people just want to know, ‘Where are we going? What’s the vision?’” Graham says. “So we try to be really purposeful and clear about the organization: where we’re going, what we’re striving for, what success looks like and then connecting the dots — ‘Here’s how your job helps us get there and here’s how you can be part of that process.’ People want to feel like part of something bigger than just the role that they fill every day.”
