David M. Cantor, founding partner, DM Cantor
Background: In addition to first-chairing a double capital murder trial resulting in a dismissal with prejudice, Cantor has handled hundreds of major felony cases that resulted in dismissals of charges, “turndowns” of prosecution, and reduced charges. After beginning his career as an assistant City of Phoenix prosecutor, where he was undefeated in 30 jury trials, Cantor went into private practice and has now first-chaired more than 200 jury trials. His early successes allowed him to become a Board-Certified Criminal Law Specialist in 1999, and he has handled many high-profile cases, which both the local and national media have covered.
Upcoming challenge: “The legal profession faces a critical challenge: mitigating the risk of AI-generated misinformation. Our practice proactively addresses this by prioritizing the development of robust writing and research skills in our lawyers, ensuring they maintain expertise independent of AI tools, and using verified AI tools through Westlaw and ‘Clear Brief.’”
Leadership lesson: “‘The Culture Code’ by Daniel Coyle highlights that vulnerability drives trust. Leaders who admit weaknesses create safer, collaborative spaces. This lesson shapes my decisions by prioritizing open communication, honest feedback, and valuing team input over rigid authority. Fostering vulnerability builds stronger, more effective teams.”
Surprising fact: “I was a volunteer wrestling coach for Chaparral High School for four years until the pandemic hit, and the season was canceled. A few years later, I was a volunteer wrestling coach for Brophy High School for two years.”
