Background: Schmittlein joined CopperPoint as president and CEO in 2016 with an ambitious vision: to set a new standard for insurance and to find a better way to deliver that experience to more and more people. After meeting with all 300-plus employees, the hunger for change and growth was clear, as was the roadmap. Through selective acquisition of like-minded companies, investments in data, technology, and infrastructure, and a continued focus on safety and service, CopperPoint has expanded to 26 states. 2022 saw organic premium growth of 8.3% over the prior year, validating the strategy, and continuing the organization’s positive trajectory.
Source of pride: “The transformational journey since 2016: From a single product line (workers’ compensation) and single state/office in Arizona into a respected specialty commercial insurer with an 11-state footprint and presence in 26 states; almost tripling revenue, while delivering a consistent quality experience to every size of client.”
Professional advice: “Do everything you’re asked throughout your career with genuine passion. Don’t be afraid to take a risk, make a lateral move to gain depth, volunteer to help on projects. Find a respected leader to be your mentor. Listen and include: change and consensus happen when people own it.”
Surprising fact: “I have a passion for tackling big game hunting with trips to Africa and many spots around the U.S., and, yes, I like camo outfits best.”
