When 39 brave men signed the United States Constitution in 1787, they changed the course of history and created one of the world’s most influential documents.
To commemorate this event, Scottsdale Mayor W. J. “Jim” Lane invites students to describe what the Constitution and Bill of Rights mean to them – in art and in words.
“This Constitution Day Contest is a fun way for young people to become more familiar with these profoundly important documents,” said Mayor Lane. “Participating in the contest will encourage them to think about our founding fathers and their ideas, and appreciate the nation we are fortunate to call home.”
The contest is divided into three categories. One grand prize winner from each category will win a gift certificate to Scottsdale Fashion Square: first through fifth grade ($100); sixth through eighth ($150); and high school ($250).

Entries can be submitted at any Scottsdale Public Library information desk or at Scottsdale City Hall. Entries may also be submitted electronically to Rachel Smetana in the mayor’s office: rsmetana@scottsdaleaz.gov.
Entries must be submitted, mailed or postmarked by Sept. 17.
Mayor Lane will host a special reception for contest participants and their families at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, in the City Hall Kiva, 3939 N. Drinkwater Blvd.
