In North Phoenix, TSMC Arizona is molding the next generation of talent at its growing semiconductor fabs. Part of the task is filling critical engineering roles and equipping others with skills to become equipment, facility, manufacturing and process technicians. The other part is investing in the youngest members of the community to ensure a robust talent pipeline.

That’s where Early Childhood Education comes in.

National research shows that children entering kindergarten engaged in early learning are 82% are likely to master basic skills by age 11, compared with 45% of those without such learning. Children enrolled in Early Childhood Education programs are also 25% more likely to graduate from high school and four times more likely to complete a bachelor’s degree.

Locally, TSMC Arizona is seeing firsthand the benefits of early childhood education through the Valley of the Sun YMCA’s Y Academy Preschools Program, which has recently expanded thanks to a $25,000 grant from TSMC Arizona. Every weekday morning, dozens of
3-to-5-year-olds experience the magic of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. It’s all part of a play-based curriculum that aids in developing youths’ foundational skills that are critical for future academic success and workplace readiness.

TSMC Arizona is lending a hand by helping to fund this structured instruction and to create dedicated STEM learning centers in classrooms, enabling children to choose STEM-focused exploration throughout the week. Such activities encourage curiosity, experimentation and child-directed learning. They also support children’s cognitive development, social-emotional growth and physical development while helping them practice planning, decision-making and other skills.

The Y’s STEM approach is grounded in developmentally appropriate, hands-on learning experiences that encourage children to explore how the world works, investigate solutions to problems and work collaboratively with others. Similar STEM frameworks emphasize that early exposure builds critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration and creativity while laying the foundation for future STEM engagement and career pathways.
