Today’s spotlight: Susan Anable

Vice president of government and public affairs

Cox Communications

Background: Anable has been with Cox Communications since 2001 and is responsible for media relations, community relations, government affairs and internal communications in Arizona and Nevada. Anable was appointed to Arizona Governor Doug Ducey’s Workforce Arizona Council in 2016 and has served as an appointee on numerous City of Phoenix task forces dealing with regulatory simplification, pension reform and technology.

Professional advice: “Feed your curiosity about every aspect of the business — operations, finance, sales and marketing, executive administration, etc. Find mentoring and reverse mentoring opportunities with top leaders in the industry who don’t do what you do and don’t look like you do.”

Lesson learned in 2020: “When the unexpected happens, it presents an opportunity for good leaders to rise and poor leaders to fail.  Not everyone experiences crisis the same way and I have learned a great deal about the importance of understanding what people need in order to successfully manage teams through epic change and challenges.”

Surprising fact: “I was once trained to operate a utility bucket truck as part of a summer job during college.”
