Arizona doesn’t need anyone to tell us we have incredible Mexican food. But when Arizona Mexican restaurants get a little love from The New York Times, it certainly doesn’t hurt.

The New York Times recently unveiled its list of the 41 best Mexican restaurants in America, assembled after reporters, editors and photographers spent more than a year traveling the country in search of standout restaurants.

Three Arizona favorites earned coveted spots — and they showcase just how diverse the state’s Mexican food scene has become.

Bacanora

If the aroma of mesquite smoke doesn’t pull you through the door at Bacanora, the restaurant’s growing collection of national accolades might.

Located on Grand Avenue in Phoenix, Bacanora has become one of Arizona’s most celebrated restaurants. Chef René Andrade won the 2024 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest, while the intimate Sonoran restaurant has earned praise for turning fire, smoke and simple ingredients into unforgettable dishes.

The New York Times singled out Bacanora’s bone-in New York strip and rib-eye while noting that its mastery of smoke extends throughout the menu.

Location: 1301 NW Grand Ave., Unit 1, Phoenix.

BK Carne Asada & Hot Dogs

Tucson brings serious Sonoran flavor to the list with BK Carne Asada & Hot Dogs, a family-owned favorite known for two Arizona borderland staples: mesquite-grilled carne asada and Sonoran hot dogs.

The New York Times also highlighted its caramelos — carne asada and melted cheese tucked inside flour tortillas — and caldo de queso.

Location: 5118 S. 12th Ave., Tucson.

Mariscos El Profe

Proof that great food doesn’t need white tablecloths, Mariscos El Profe serves some of Arizona’s most celebrated Mexican seafood from a food truck in south Phoenix.

The New York Times praised the unassuming destination as a serious contender among the Southwest’s parking-lot culinary gems.

For Arizona food lovers, the national recognition reinforces something locals have known for years: Some of America’s most exciting Mexican food is being grilled, folded, simmered and served right here in the Grand Canyon State.
