Things To Do In Arizona: Biosphere 2

Participate in something unique this summer that will not only educate, but help you get involved in your community — Biosphere 2.

Located north of Tuscon, Ariz., sitting at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains, Biosphere 2 is a center of research, outreach, teaching and learning all about the Earth. But during your visit, you’ll also have the opportunity to become a member. By doing so, you’ll be able to get involved in the community and help out with various outreach programs, gaining hands-on experience that’s out of this world.

Biosphere 2 also offers tours, which include an introductory film, a historical overview, and a discussion of past and present research. Online, you’ll also find an interactive tour allowing you to explore the Biosphere 2 from an aerial view at your computer.

Always keeping its goal in mind, Biosphere 2 also offers an outreach and education program that provides community events and research experience for University of Arizona (UA) undergraduates. Community events include Science Saturday, Science Cafes and Citizen Science. Included with the cost of tour admission, Science Saturday events are designed to provide hands-on experience with science. Science Café, on the other hand, is a free event that allows UA scientists and the community to interact with one another at various venues in the area, such as Crushing Street, Saddlebrooke, Oro Valley, Green Valley, Sun City Vistoso, Gallagher Theater and Tumamoc Hill. And, lastly, Citizen Science is an opportunity to participate and help with science research and outreach efforts.
