Being involved in the modeling industry can be very rewarding and fulfilling. Some people do it as a hobby and others make it a career. Because the modeling industry is an arena where all different looks, ages and sizes can work, those considering getting into the industry need to find out which categories would be realistic to work in.

Looking in front of the mirror, striking a pose and giving yourself that, “Wow, am I good looking or what?” look, won’t cut it. If you are seriously wondering if you could be a model, you want to converse with a knowledgeable and reputable agent for an honest assessment of your potential. Essentially, it is based on the overall marketability of a person.

There are many different layers to the modeling industry. A high-fashion model is most often hired to model clothing for print and to walk the runway. The criteria for this area of modeling is fairly strict, as height, age, measurements and sizes are the focus. A female, high-fashion model should be 5’9” to 6’, whereas the best height for a male model is 6’ to 6’4”.  There have been some exceptions, but for the most part those specifications are prevalent in the high-fashion world.

Specialty modeling is another category that includes petite models, plus-size models, mature models and fitness models ― each having their own specifications.

Commercial print is the area that opens the door to a wide range of model types. Ultimately, it does not matter how tall or old you are; if you fit what the client is looking for, you can work as a commercial print model.

Breaking into the modeling industry involves a positive attitude, focus, patience and certain level of commitment, depending on how busy you want to be. It commands a level of professionalism, and it should never be a playground for egos. For the model, it is all about becoming marketable, which involves a process of learning and self-discovery. For the client, it is all about booking models for the sole purpose to sell or showcase their products or brand. They want to work with models who are professional, easy to work with, who can project effectively, and, ultimately, give the client what they need for the advertisements to be a success.

The modeling industry is intriguing and can be a wonderful creative outlet for anyone who may have a thought as simple as, “Hey, I could do that.”
