  • Architect: Cuningham Group

  • City: Bylas
  • Size: 36,000 square feet

The Clarence Wesley Health Center (CWHC) is a 34,000-square-foot modern healthcare facility located approximately five miles south of Bylas, in the shadow of sacred Mount Turnbull. This state-of-the-art center replaces an older, smaller facility that had been damaged by shifting soils, providing the San Carlos Apache community with a modern medical hub.

The facility significantly expands the range of healthcare services available locally. Notable features include a medical wing with 13 exam rooms, a dental area with five chairs, and dedicated spaces for optometry, physical therapy and laboratory services. The CWHC introduces imaging services, such as X-ray and ultrasound, allowing residents to receive diagnostics without traveling to other parts of the reservation or Phoenix.

Technical and design excellence further distinguish the facility. The center uses an Exterior Insulation Finishing System (EIFS) for energy efficiency. It is also equipped with a backup electrical system capable of powering the entire building for 96 hours. The design incorporates Apache cultural elements, such as aligning entrances to the east, using radial planning inspired by the sacred circle, and featuring a mural of nearby Mount Turnbull.

Phase I of the Pascua Yaqui Health Center project delivered a 34,000-square-foot, steel-framed, metal-clad facility on a five-acre site. The clinic includes primary care, dental, podiatry, physical therapy, pharmacy, imaging and administrative spaces, along with a dedicated exercise and wellness room.

A partially shaded central courtyard with colored concrete and cast-in-place seating supports community gatherings and outdoor wellness activities. Interior design elements, such as floor-to-ceiling glazing, skylights, Solatubes, terrazzo flooring, and a custom hummingbird mosaic, enhance daylighting while celebrating Pascua Yaqui culture through integrated tribal artwork. Phase II added a 6,000-square-foot expansion to increase clinical and administrative capacity, along with covered parking and secured staff areas.

The project faced significant challenges, including supply-chain delays, evolving equipment requirements and an unexpected mid-construction scope expansion. Through proactive scheduling, alternative material sourcing, and close coordination with stakeholders, the team maintained progress and delivered the facility on time and within budget. The completed clinic now serves as a vital anchor for community health, equity and long-term wellness in Guadalupe.

  • Architect: HKS
  • Owner: Phoenix Children’s Hospital
  • Subcontractors: Progressive Commercial Interiors, DP Electric, Western Millwork, Gen3 AZ, Integrated Masonry
  • City: Glendale
  • Size: 225,000 square feet

As one of the most significant pediatric healthcare expansions in the region’s history, the $132 million Phoenix Children’s Arrowhead campus brings world-class, specialized care directly to families who previously traveled long distances for treatment. The campus seamlessly integrates a 180,000-square-foot hospital, 45,000-square-foot multispecialty clinic, and 12,000-square-foot central utility plant, creating a unified hub for emergency, surgical, inpatient, diagnostic and specialty services.

The hospital’s 48 inpatient beds, six state-of-the-art operating rooms, advanced imaging suite and 24/7 emergency department reflect a deep commitment to delivering cutting-edge pediatric care. Meanwhile, the clinic’s more than 25 subspecialties strengthen coordinated, family-centered treatment. Designed to support up to 72,000 annual visits, the campus meaningfully expands access to care in a region that urgently needed it.

The project team navigated shifting site conditions, complex multifacility permitting and a volatile post-pandemic market, while also addressing the unique challenge of building a central utility plant just 79 feet from an adjacent residential neighborhood. This required careful planning, acoustic mitigation and ongoing community communication. Through proactive design coordination, early procurement, and unified problem-solving, the project was ultimately delivered on schedule and within budget.
