Nationally recognized design and planning firm Gould Evans announced that the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) Justice Center and Missouri Innovation Campus (MIC) have both received 2018 American Architecture Awards from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre of Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
“We’re honored to receive two American Architecture Awards this year,” said Tony Rohr, National Managing Principal of Gould Evans. “Both projects that are being recognized are emblematic of how we design to create meaningful outcomes for our clients: responding to their specific challenge, and the cultural and physical context they are operating in.”
The Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community Justice Center is a tribal court and practitioners’ building located in the nearly native Sonoran Desert. The tribe’s sovereign land shares its borders with the larger Phoenix metropolis. The facility is designed to uphold the tribe’s unique sense of identity, beauty and humanity, amid this adjacency. The primary building materials–glass, weathered steel and concrete–reflect the desert vernacular. The craft of the concrete and a custom rebar scrim demonstrate the community’s deep care for the handmade and provide a glimpse into distinctive tribal sensibilities toward artistry, significance of place and community.
The Missouri Innovation Campus, a “campus in a building” which houses the most accelerated degree program in the country, is designed to support the evolution of traditional education models and better prepare graduates for the workplace environment. Distinctions among spaces for lecture, lab, meeting, work and community are blurred, enabling students to choose the environment that fits their learning style and gain competency-based skills at their own pace.
The American Architecture Awards honor the most significant buildings and landscape and planning projects designed and/or built in the United States and abroad by the most important American architects, landscape architects, and urban planners practicing nationally and internationally and international architects and designers practicing inside the USA.

Gould Evans has won American Architecture Awards in past years for the University of Kansas DeBruce Center for the Original Rules of Basketball, Lawrence Public Library and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Southwest Fisheries Science Center.
