Sundt Construction’s Dave Fleming, vice president and corporate director of dispute resolution and corporate director of ethics and compliance, was awarded the American Institute of Constructors (AIC) 2016 Stephen P. Byrne Award for supporting the advancement of the construction industry and the AIC’s Constructor Certification at a high level.
“I was surprised and honored to have received this award and to have my name associated with Stephen Byrne, who was an old friend of mine and someone I got to know very well during his time at Texas A&M, the AIC and here at Sundt,” Fleming said. “I never expected the award because I was just doing what was right for the industry and for the student-level certification of construction graduates.”
Fleming, past president of the AIC, a nonprofit membership association dedicated to advancing ethics and professionalism in the construction industry, was instrumental in transforming the organization’s Associate Constructor (AC) and Certified Professional Constructor (CPC) certification programs.
These programs recognize individuals for the skills, knowledge and professionalism needed to manage the construction process. In 2014, under Fleming’s leadership, the rigorous AC and CPC programs were granted accreditation by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), further elevating them to among the highest professional achievements in the construction industry.
“This award is a tremendous honor and is very well deserved,” said Sundt’s Senior Vice President and General Counsel Ron Stuff. “Dave has contributed greatly to the construction industry. From his board-level involvement with numerous organizations, like the AIC, to his tireless efforts in promoting ethics and professionalism, Dave has always found ways to contribute to improvements in our business.”
Fleming, an industry veteran of 40 years, joined Sundt in 1991—first as a consultant and in 2003 becoming an employee-owner of the general contractor.
He has assumed various key leadership roles at Sundt, including vice president and operations manager of the Texas District and vice president and operations manager with respect to the company’s federal government work.
Prior to joining Sundt, Fleming was an executive for two other commercial contractors. In 2014, Fleming was named among the Outstanding Alumni of the Texas A&M College of Architecture, the highest honor bestowed by the college on its former students. The award is intended to recognize achievements of A&M graduates from the College of Architecture for contributions to the industry and their excellence in professional leadership.
