The intersection of Roosevelt and 24th Street is looking quite different recently as Valleywise Health continues progress on the construction of its brand new, state-of-the-art medical center expected to open in late 2023. The public safety net health care system for Maricopa County broke ground on the 673,000 square-foot, 10-story medical center two years ago on February 26 and one-year after hoisted the final beam on the building during a ceremonial topping out ceremony on February 25, 2021.
Today, the building is nearly 70% complete as final roofing activities on the main tower begin, with paint, flooring and other finishes being started on the basement and first floors and continuing upward. Lead contractor Kitchell is currently utilizing 575 construction personnel to keep the project running on schedule. Of the many improvements being made, the renowned Arizona Burn Center at Valleywise Health will all be housed on one floor with its own external entrance, advancements will be made to the Level 1 Trauma Center and overall aesthetic improvements for patients and their guests.

The new medical center will replace the more than 50-year-old facility Valleywise Health is currently operating in.
“Year over year, the excitement grows internally and within the community as this new facility comes closer to completion,” says Valleywise Health President and CEO, Steve Purves. “When we started this journey back in 2014, it was hard to visualize what this new healthcare beacon in our community would look like. Now I can physically see how this medical center will improve the exceptional care we already provide, but also enhance the community’s perception of Valleywise Health.”
In the same two years since breaking ground on the medical center, Valleywise Health has also expanded its network of community health centers, opening five brand new locations to better serve residents across the Valley. These 126,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facilities have been opened in South Phoenix/Laveen, North Phoenix, Peoria, West Marvyale and Mesa. Each of the locations provides primary and pediatric care, integrated behavioral health services and on-site pharmacy with specialty services available pending location.
“The transformation we have experienced over the last two-years, all through a global pandemic, has been nothing short of inspirational,” says Purves. “Our care teams, construction and community partners have come together in a way that is unique to our Valley community and we are so proud of this expansion to provide care options to residents where it is convenient to them.”
