Waste Management of Arizona announced the opening of the Maricopa Organics Recycling Facility that will be located at its Sierra Estrella facility.

The project was developed in collaboration with Garick LLC, the leading manufacturer, marketer and distributor of biomass fuel supply, organic lawn and garden products. Teaming up with Waste Management, Inc., the leading provider of comprehensive waste management services in North America, the duo will help divert materials away from landfills and give them new life through organics.

“Garick is excited to be collaborating with Waste Management of Arizona to help the local communities, including the City of Maricopa, recycle materials that would otherwise be disposed in a landfill,” says John Gundlach, senior vice president of Garick’s Environmental and Energy Group. “We look forward to building and growing our business in Maricopa.”

Waste Management of Arizona will collect green waste, such as yard and clean wood waste recovered from the company’s transfer stations, to be processed by Garick into biomass wood fuel, which will be sold primarily to Frito-Lay to run its Casa Grande, Ariz. facility. Additionally, Garick will produce compost and mulch for local use.

“We are pleased to work with Garick, a leader in generating natural resource products, by adding organics recycling to our portfolio of services,” says Pat DeRueda, Waste Management of Arizona-New-Mexico-area vice president. “This illustrates one way we are diversifying our service offering and creating sustainable solutions for our customers, while area consumers, businesses and communities benefit from locally developed compost and mulch.”

This is just one of the many innovative ways Waste Management finds sustainable solutions meeting the needs of their diverse customer base.
