Luster Custom Homes & Remodeling’s project in Scottsdale’s private country club community of Mirabel took top honors with two awards in the 2015 Best in American Living Awards (BALA), announced at the International Builders’ Show last month.
Receiving top accolades, the project was named “Home of the Year” and secured a platinum award in the custom home category for projects 4,501-6,000 square-feet. The BALA annual awards are hosted by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).
The 5,385 square-foot, single-story home features a hacienda-style design with sweeping views and a floor plan that encourages family togetherness and outdoor living. Featuring four bedrooms, and five and a half baths, an open floor plan allows for the living room, dining room and kitchen to flow effortlessly into one central space overlooking the golf course.
Long adjacent hallways lead to the private quarters, while expansive glass doors open to seamlessly connect the indoor and outdoor living spaces. The centerpiece is an infinity-edge pool that appears to drop into the desert and when the water is still, becomes a beautiful mirror that reflects the sky.
BALA judges selected the home as the best custom home of the year because of its well-defined, yet open spaces, and graceful, serene and elegant characteristics. The judges were particularly impressed by the clean lines and scalloped arches used throughout the design of the home.
“Building this home is something we are incredibly proud of. We were involved from the very beginning, and it shows. The design is extremely well-thought out and it truly maximizes the beauty of Mirabel golf course and the surrounding environment in an effortless way,” said Tanner Luster, president and owner of Luster Custom Homes & Remodeling. “The result is a home that is exceptionally comfortable, yet refined, and features remarkable attention to detail.”
For the interiors, Kim Scodro of Kim Scodro Interiors, selected a sea of pale blues, grays, sands and creams to create a soft and calming palette. A matte plaster finish on the interior walls provides a subtle depth to the soaring spaces, while textures of wood lend to softness and warmth. Reclaimed barnwood shelving and alder ceiling beams mirror the textured white oak floors and 18th-century Spanish doors. One of the home’s most unique design elements is faux hide in the coffered office ceiling – a detail that required almost 3,800 individual nailheads and three days of installation.
“The BALAs are the most prestigious awards of their kind, recognizing the very best in residential home design,” said Heather McCune, 2015 BALA subcommittee co-chair and director of marketing at the Southern California-based design firm Bassenian, Lagoni. “Those who become BALA recipients join an esteemed group of the most talented home building professionals, many of whom are continually driving our industry toward new heights of creativity and ingenuity.”
The home was built by Scottsdale-based Luster Custom Homes & Remodeling, designed by PHX Architecture, with interiors designed by Kim Scodro of Kim Scodro Interiors.
Now in its 32nd year, BALA recognizes outstanding achievement by builders and design professionals in all sectors of the residential housing industry including single-family production, custom, rental, affordable, interiors, remodeling, community and international, based on the principle that good design is not, and should not be, limited to high-priced and/or custom homes. Even the simplest, most affordable homes can receive an award if they showcase good design.
Award winners were announced during the annual NAHB International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas.
