There is something new in the “injectable” industry and it seems to be a good alternative to the popular Botox and Dysport.

Phoenix’s Suddenly Slimmer Med Spa is introducing the latest contender in the list of botulinum toxin A injectables for facial rejuvenation, XEOMIN. XEOMIN, contains no accessory protein, making it a “pure” version of botulinum toxin and reducing the risk of allergic reaction or natural resistance.

XEOMIN is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat fine lines and wrinkles. Just like Botox and Dysport, XEOMIN works by relaxing wrinkle-causing muscles through injections.

“There are some injectables, like Restylane, that are fillers. They simply ‘fill out’ the wrinkles and stretch the wrinkles ever so slightly to rid of the crease,” explains Jeanie Marcelino, spa director.

XEOMIN’s characteristics are more similar to Botox and Dysport because they work by relaxing the underlying muscles that cause the wrinkles in the first place. Therefore, it targets the cause of wrinkles, not only filling in the creased surface. XEOMIN is not a “cure-all” but its efficacy is significant and a treatment may last up to six months.

“One obvious difference XEOMIN has from Botox and Dysport is that it doesn’t come refrigerated,” said Marcelino. This could be an advantage when it comes to distribution of the product. It also has no additives like its counterparts, which could lessen the likelihood of developing antibodies to XEOMIN. This basically means that the body will adapt to the drug more easily and not develop antibodies that would prevent it from doing its job.

XEOMIN should always be administered in a sterile environment by trained professionals. XEOMIN, Botox and Dysport should also NOT be interchangeable.

According to Marcelino, XEOMIN takes about a week to see its full effects. The cost is very similar to Botox and side effects are fairly similar as well – minor swelling, headaches and bruising.

“We are very excited about this product. Our existing patients are already in love with it and we can’t wait to have new patients to try it,” Marcelino said.
