Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center in Gilbert, Arizona recently added a board-certified colorectal surgeon to enhance its comprehensive treatment program for patients with benign and malignant health conditions in the colon, rectum or anus.
The program includes multidisciplinary care that incorporates radiation oncology, medical oncology (such as chemotherapy) and colorectal surgery for a wide range of cases, including complex and aggressive rectal cancer.
“Having these specialty services available in one location makes a major impact in treating colorectal cancer,” said Dr. William Cirocco, colon and rectal surgeon for Banner MD Anderson. “For most anal and rectal cancer patients, this could help in avoiding the need for a permanent colostomy.”
The program includes sphincter-sparing operations that preserve physical function as much as possible (avoiding a permanent colostomy); surgeries for rectal cancer or inflammatory bowel disease; proctology; and treatment for rectal polyps.
Pre-surgical treatment is also available, and can help in reducing the amount of surgery needed.
