But which online side hustles are actually worth your time in 2026? To find out, the experts at Hopp by Wix analysed the current landscape to identify five opportunities that are genuinely low-maintenance, low-barrier to entry, and can generate real income for people building financial security without sacrificing their day jobs.

5 flexible ways to earn extra income online in 2026

1. Virtual assistance

Virtual assistance has become a multi-billion-dollar industry, valued at USD 4.12 billion as of 2020 and climbing by nearly a quarter each year. The talent pool is expanding at the same pace: what started as 3.9 million practitioners in 2020 will balloon to 8.4 million by 2028, showing just how rapidly this field is maturing. Freelance virtual assistants reportedly earn an average salary of $52,900, with top earners reaching over $82,600.

You don’t have to overload yourself when starting out – begin with 5-10 hours weekly handling email management, scheduling, or social media for one client. Work during your commute, evenings, or weekend mornings.

Most creators and small business owners already have access to powerful automation tools, email flows, scheduling, community management, and platforms like Hopp make them incredibly easy to set up,” explains Amir Gabay, Co-CEO of Hopp by Wix. ”But ease doesn’t equal desire. Even when the setup is simple, most people just want to stay focused on creating and growing their audience. That’s where virtual assistants come in. We’re seeing a clear shift where VAs aren’t just doing admin,  they’re running the systems behind the business.

2. Freelance translation

If you’re already bilingual, you’re sitting on a goldmine. Freelance translators earn between $44,000 and $133,000 annually, with the average hitting $78,600. Top specialists in legal and medical translation command $60-$100 per hour. The flexibility is unmatched: accept projects that fit your schedule, work from your couch after dinner, or tackle weekend assignments.

Bilingual individuals already have the core skill, they’re simply monetizing fluency built over years,” adds Gabay, “You can start with a single project, test the waters, and build from there. The demand for natural-sounding translations that can’t yet be done accurately using artificial intelligence means skilled linguists can build substantial income streams without disrupting their current careers.

High-demand languages like Japanese, Mandarin, and German are particularly lucrative, with one translator reporting $145,000 earned in 2025 after growing from side hustle to full time.

3. Selling digital products

If you have knowledge or skills in areas like fitness, cooking, personal finance, or skincare, you already have the foundations for valuable digital products. Online courses, ebooks, and tutorials can generate significant income. Research from a social commerce platform shows the top 10% of their creators pulled in over $55,000 in a mere three-month span.

You don’t need a huge following to succeed. Many sellers attract buyers through search engines, email, and communities. A small, engaged audience that trusts your recommendations is more powerful than millions of passive followers. Start by choosing a topic you know well and creating products that teach or solve problems. Publish helpful content consistently and optimise it for search.

Selling digital products can be a real game changer,” says Yaron Orenstein, Co-CEO at Hopp by Wix.

Whether it is a course, an ebook, or a tutorial, creators can easily reach the people who need what they offer. Even creators with small audiences can turn consistent content into meaningful income with time. It’s also a great way to share knowledge and keep growing as a creator yourself.

4. Print-on-demand

Artists, designers, and creators already have inventory. The print-on-demand market is expected to grow from $12.96 billion to $102.99 billion by 2034, making it one of the fastest-growing ways to monetize creative work.

An illustrator with Instagram followers can launch a print shop in an afternoon. A graphic designer can sell posters or designs originally created for past clients. Photographers can offer prints of their work. Once designs are uploaded, the setup happens just once and continues running with minimal ongoing effort.

Profit margins typically range from 20% to 40%, with many sellers earning $500 to $3,000 per month, and some reporting over $10,000. Because printing, packaging, and shipping are handled by manufacturers, creators can focus on promotion and design without dealing with physical inventory or logistics.

5. Evergreen background video creation

Here’s the wild one: recent reports have found that a single YouTube video of a crackling fireplace has generated over $1.2 million. Similarly, one creator of Lo-Fi study beats is estimated to be making up to $116k a month from their background videos. The method is clear: Create it once, earn forever.

Ambient sounds, nature recordings, white noise and ASMR-style content generate passive income across YouTube, Spotify, and similar streaming apps. Record them whenever, using your own footage or online sources, upload when convenient, and let the algorithm work. While it is a slow burner and success isn’t guaranteed, It’s the ultimate low-maintenance income stream that never conflicts with your day job.
