Banner University Medical Center Phoenix (BUMCP) was awarded its third Magnet designation recently by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®. This prestigious designation recognizes health care organizations for excellence in nursing services, and demonstrates the highest honor that can be received in the profession.

BUMCP is ranked among the nation’s leading health care facilities for nursing care and was the first Banner facility to achieve Magnet status in 2005, and again in 2010. Today, BUMCP is one of only seven hospitals in Arizona, including Banner – University Medical Center Tucson, and 420 hospitals in the country to receive this designation.

Magnet recognizes demonstration of transformational leadership, structures and processes that provide for professional development, exemplary professional practice and an infrastructure that promotes nursing research, evidence based practice and innovation leading to meaningful outcomes for patients, nurses and the organization.

“I am extremely gratified by this recognition and can’t thank our dedicated nurses and staff enough for their commitment to excellence as well as the strong leadership that supports these efforts,” said Rachel Behrendt, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer at BUMCP. “Our entire team works tirelessly delivering exceptional patient care and improving patient outcomes and its humbling to have such remarkable work honored – once again and consistently.”

The hospital received special acknowledgment for several areas including nursing engagement, patient outcomes, and using nursing specialty organization standards to improve care and outcomes. With more than 1,300 nursing professionals serving roughly 40,000 inpatients annually, it is the largest and longest serving medical center in Arizona to hold the honor.
