It’s not often you see something so spectacular; it stops you in your tracks! Well, that is da Vinci 5! Guests stood in awe at Abrazo West Campus yesterday as the hospital unveiled the amazing da Vinci 5 surgical robot and allowed the public to test drive her to see for themselves how artificial intelligence is transforming medicine at Abrazo.

She (her voice is female) has four impressive arms, 10,000 times the computing power of her predecessor, cost 2.7 million dollars and is transforming the way doctors practice medicine.

“The new da Vinci 5 robotic system has taken nearly a decade to develop and enables us to perform complex cases with exceptional precision,” says Dr. Amir Esparza, MD, Colon and Rectal/Advanced Robotic Surgeon.

Thanks to force feedback technology, da Vinci 5 allows us to feel tissue and tension and marks a crucial step toward the future of robotic systems performing surgeries autonomously,” he says. She also has a redesigned console allowing surgeons to find their best fit for viewing and comfort.

Additionally, the new platform, “the Hub,” harnesses the power of AI, allowing surgeons to access data from previous cases to inform future decisions.

Dr. Esparza is the first to perform colorectal surgery in Arizona using da Vinci 5.  He says she allows him to apply up to 43 percent less force on human tissues/organs while performing surgery resulting in less trauma to the patient, something no other robotic surgical technology in any modality offers. It helps shorten a patient’s stay in the hospital and leads to faster recovery times and smaller incisions/scars.

Abrazo West Campus has equipped surgeons with da Vinci 5 for patients requiring surgeries such as colorectal surgery, hernia repair, appendectomy and gall bladder removal, among other procedures.

“The continued investment by Abrazo West in the most advanced robotic surgical platforms equips our surgeons with the best technology to help our patients,” says Hans Driessnack, Abrazo West Campus CEO.

Da Vinci 5 offers more than 150 enhancements, including new surgeon controllers, powerful vibration and tremor controls for even smoother and more precise movements. She is equipped with a high-quality and natural 3D imaging system, enabling surgeons to see more as they operate.

“With more than $6.5 million of investment in just the past two years, Abrazo West continues to lead the charge in bringing the most advanced technology to the West Valley,” says Driessnack.
