What began as a spark of inspiration on a flight home from London has grown into one of Tempe’s most beloved destinations for afternoon tea. This month, Drink Me! Tea Room, the 100% gluten-free and plant-based tea room nestled in the heart of Tempe, is celebrating its 5-year anniversary.

Founded by Melissa Harlan in July 2020, Drink Me! Tea Room was born from a desire to create an inclusive, whimsical space where no one has to miss out on the joy of afternoon tea due to dietary restrictions. Inspired by her own journey with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and the healing power of nutrition, Melissa left her corporate career to create a magical tea experience built entirely around wellness, hospitality, and imagination.

“Our kitchen and menu are completely plant-based and gluten-free, so our guests never have to worry about allergens or feeling left out,” said Harlan. “People have cried tears of joy just being able to eat safely and enjoy a special moment.”

Themes at the tea room include Alice in Wonderland, Hamil-Tea, and more, with new events offered monthly. The space is known for its hand-crafted tea treats, special-tea cocktails, and immersive decor—all designed to transport guests into a storybook setting.

Now five years in, the tea room is also a family affair. Melissa’s daughter, a recent graduate of Corona del Sol High School, now oversees the creation of the tea room’s handcrafted menu items, continuing the tradition of plant-based, gluten-free excellence.

Drink Me! Tea Room has also gained recognition for its sustainability practices. It is a Certified Green Business in Arizona, sources organic and ethically traded teas, and partners with local artisans to minimize waste and support the community.

To mark the occasion, Drink Me! is planning a month of special events and limited-edition treats to thank the community for five years of support.
