“The Business Fashionista” is AZ Big Media’s fashion blog for the business-minded. It examines the dos, don’ts and musts of the modern fashionista who wants to stay in step with the latest trends in the workplace.

When you find yourself spending more time than necessary looking in your closest for just one article of clothing that isn’t too tight or too loose, you might want to rethink your shopping habits.

Even though trends in fashion are screaming tighter or looser, remember that there is a limit to how much skin you can expose at the office. To all the business fashionistas out there, the only asset you should be showing off is your brain.

Many of you might have wondered at one point in time about how much skin you can show. Do you need to cover yourself head-to-toe? Of course not. Truly, it depends on your own office environment. Some women might be able to get away with a lot more.

Regardless of the environment, every woman should know what to wear to the office in terms of fit. If you’re wearing a loose fitting blouse that shows full on cleavage and a skintight pencil skirt: 1. You’re giving off the wrong impression to your boss and coworkers by implying that you’re not serious about your job. 2. How can you possibly do anything productive while wearing an outfit that you’re too afraid to bend over in?

The right fit is key for any business fashionista. Clothing that is too tight, more times than not, actually appears unflattering on the body. For clothing that is too loose, your body becomes either swallowed up or in desperate need for more fit.

The office is a place to work, and that’s it. It’s not a place to dress risqué. As previously discussed, your work outfit should be workable. Now what you wear after work is up to you.

With that said, the obvious main work outfit DON’T here is wearing anything too tight or too loose that exposes your body. Incase you want more guidance:
    Don’t wear pants so tight that every inch of your legs and bottom can be seen.
    Don’t draw attention to cleavage with a tight camisole or a loose scoop neck
    Don’t expose your bra ever…
    Don’t try to hide your crime with a blazer (unless you leave it buttoned the whole day)

While most don’t want to be the dull and conservative one in the office, exposing an inappropriate amount of skin is not the way to go. Don’t let advertisements fool you. You don’t have to be the total package of sexy and smart.

Unfortunately, women can still be defined by their appearance. If you disregard the amount of skin you’re showing, you’re only putting yourself at a disadvantage.
