1. Fixing Gutters on Your Own
Over time, corrosion and rust can cause small holes in your gutters or downspouts.
You need to seal them to help prevent any future damage. You can use simple roofing cement, a putty knife, and a wire brush.
Clear the area of any debris and dry it with a cloth. Clean the holes with your wire brush. Put a small blob of your roof cement over any pinholes. With your putty knife, smooth the cement.
If you have bigger holes or leaks, see if these areas are near the seams or end caps. If you’re working on fixing a leak at the seam, see if the gutter lengths are firm against one another. Line up the gutter sealant on either side of the joints.
If you’re trying to fix a leak at the end cap, place sealant along the inner part of the joint. For holes in the gutter material, use roofing cement.
2. Cleaning out Gutters
For this task, you’ll need a ladder and a pair of thick work gloves. Pick up a small plastic shovel for when you need to clear the gutters.
You’ll also need eye protection. To save time afterward, lay out a tarp so you can throw debris on the ground.
If someone is around to help, ask them to keep your ladder sturdy as you reach toward a section. With your shovel, remove the debris and dump it on the tarp. Move to the opposite end, further away from the downspout.
You can remove any leftover debris or dirt with your garden hose. Flush out the gutter with water. Watch to see if water collects anywhere. Pools of water will reveal there is a blockage.
See if the water is draining from your downspouts. If not, they need clearing. Put your garden hose inside the spout. The water should remove any blockage. If this doesn’t work, use a plumber’s snake tool.
3. Maintaining Gutters
Twigs and leaves will gather in your gutters throughout the year. If you’re not removing the debris, your gutters will clog, and water rests on your roof. This can cause your roof to leak.
Schedule in cleanings throughout the year, making it part of your chore list. This will help extend the life of your gutters.
You can even install gutter guards to protect your gutters. Check out the different types here.
