The story of Silk for Everyone began as a small act of necessity that grew into something much bigger.

Eight years ago, single mom Juliane Popelka was wrestling nightly with her daughter’s textured curls and discovering, like so many parents, that real silk could help. However, it was priced impossibly out of reach.

Instead of settling for cheap imitations or luxury markups, she went searching for answers. What she found — through persistence, curiosity, and a mother’s determination — became the foundation for a business built on honesty, craft, and accessibility.

“I grew up around factories. I know what real materials cost and what retail markups should look like,” Popelka said.

“The numbers didn’t add up. I knew there had to be a more accessible path.”

Her determination led her to the world of silk production. Popelka began working directly with growers and artisans who plant, harvest, cut, dye, and sew within a tightly connected 30-mile region — an old-world system of craftsmanship that would eventually define her brand.

At first, she made just enough for her daughter, then her mother, then a handful of friends. A quiet, transparent supply chain began to take shape long before she imagined it might become a business.

The pandemic changed everything. Silk’s natural breathability and hypoallergenic qualities unexpectedly made it one of the most sought-after materials for masks.

Requests poured in from friends, neighbors and strangers. Popelka created a simple website, offering pillowcases, masks, scrunchies, and eye masks in small batches, and shared it with her Facebook community. Orders showed up immediately.

When Phoenix’s outdoor markets reopened, she set up a folding table at Fifth and Roosevelt streets, expecting a slow start. Instead, customers connected instantly with the transparency and intention behind what would officially become Silk for Everyone.

Now, loyal customers follow her from Phoenix artisan markets to First Friday pop-ups, many sharing the same frustrations and relief she felt eight years earlier: the search for real silk at a price they can trust.

What sets Silk for Everyone apart:

  • A Phoenix-born small business created by a single mom who refused to accept overpriced “luxury” as the only path to healthy hair.
  • Genuine silk sourced directly from growers and artisans who plant, harvest, cut, dye and sew within a tightly connected 30-mile region, ensuring consistency, craftsmanship, and ethical production.
  • Transparent, fair pricing rooted in real manufacturing costs rather than inflated retail markups, making premium materials accessible to everyday families.
  • Thousands of repeat customers who discovered the brand at Phoenix markets, recommended it to friends, and grew it organically through trust.
  • A beloved fixture at local artisan markets and First Friday, where customers return not just for products, but for the founder’s honesty, expertise and community-driven approach.
  • Small-batch production prioritizes quality over volume, allowing each pillowcase, mask, scrunchie or eye mask to be inspected, handled and finished with care.
  • A brand built on candor and education, helping customers understand the difference between real silk, satin, and mislabeled blends so they can make empowered, informed choices.

“People tell me they’re tired of sorting through mislabeled products or paying luxury prices for something that shouldn’t cost that much,” Popelka says. “About 75 percent of my customers share their own story of frustration. It’s a reminder that accessibility matters.”
