Uptown Phoenix’s first-ever neighborhood hotel is preparing to welcome its first guests later this year, and it’s packing a lineup of food and beverage offerings, coffee shops and even a retro rooftop cocktail lounge worthy of the Valley’s most desirable, trendsetting neighborhood. The project, first unveiled at a groundbreaking during Modern Phoenix Week last year, pairs two of the Valley’s most seasoned adaptive reuse developers – Venue Projects (The Newton, The Orchard, and Central Market, which houses Spiritual Gangster, Windsor and Churn) and Vintage Partners (Uptown Plaza, Timber Sky, Milltown, Wanderland), with ARRIVE, the Los Angeles-based neighborhood hotel company focused on low-key luxury, and currently operating hotels in East Austin, Palm Springs, and Wilmington, NC. The all-new $20 million, 79-room ARRIVE Phoenix is scheduled to open later this year inside twin restored mid-century modern towers at Camelback Road and 4th Avenue (400 W. Camelback), in Phoenix.
ARRIVE’s mission is to welcome people to the neighborhood, and ARRIVE Phoenix continues this approach by announcing partnerships with Cartel Coffee Lab and Great Minds Drink Alike, the hospitality company known for globally-recognized Phoenix projects Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour and Little Rituals. Together with ARRIVE’s in-house team, this project brings not only a boutique hotel to a boutique neighborhood, but a true Uptown Phoenix neighborhood experience by locals, and for locals.
Part paleta paradise, part hotel check-in desk, the ARRIVE popsicle stand is the starting point for an ARRIVE escape. Hotel guests will enjoy complimentary handcrafted paletas-style popsicles with whole fruit, nuts, chocolate and more, while completing their check-in process. Locals will also be rewarded for a drop-in, as the ever-changing menu with regularly debut exclusive flavor collaborations with chefs, bartenders, and purveyors.
Cartel Uptown Phoenix
Cartel Coffee Lab has quickly become the defining factor of whether a neighborhood is ready for a true “third wave” coffee experience. Cartel Uptown Phoenix will be the boutique roaster’s first Uptown Phoenix location, housed in a sleek 1,200-sq.-ft. space fronting Camelback Road, and is the third collaboration with ARRIVE, with locations also at ARRIVE Palms Springs and ARRIVE East Austin. “ARRIVE and Cartel had an instant chemistry,” says Paul Haworth, Cartel’s Director of Brand, “and based on the feedback we’ve received parking our roasting cart at the nearby Uptown Farmers Market, we look forward to being a part of the Uptown Phoenix neighborhood for decades to come.” Offering fresh baked goodies and grab and go meals, Cartel Uptown Phoenix will offer their full coffee program, complete with single-origin beans, manual pour-overs, canned cold brew, plus one & one flights that allow coffee aficionados to experience and appreciate espresso in a more interactive way. Plus, given the proximity to 79-rooms of coffee fiends, they’ll offer a retail program as well as signature pour-over travel kits that guests can take with them on their next adventure.
Lylo Pool Bar
Elevated cocktails in a pool bar setting is an elusive balance often lost to loud music, watery drinks, and light beer. Enter Lylo Pool Bar, a stunning mid-century style poolside bar led by local cocktail guru Ross Simon of Great Minds Drink Alike, known best for his globally-awarded and recognized cocktail bars Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour, and Little Rituals. Pronounced ‘lie-low’, a UK term for a pool float, Lylo tempts with fun, balanced and cooling cocktails such as Shandies, Fruit Lagerita’s and other reworked poolside favorites, all served with eco-conscious thoughtfulness and colorful plush acrylic drinkware. Plus enjoy craft canned beers and wine, shareable punch bowls and even a rum-spiked version of the classic Dole Whip frozen pineapple drink. Open daily, Lylo also features an all-day menu of light, Asian-influenced bites such as rolled-to-order spring rolls, poke bowls, and Japanese Karaage-style fried chicken.
Don Woods’ Say When
History recreated, not reimagined. This is the ethos of ARRIVE’s bon vivant-style penthouse cocktail lounge, informed by the 1970s classic entertaining tome, “Playboy’s Host & Bar Book,” a long-lost guide to exceptional entertaining. Open the book to the aptly titled chapter “Say When,” and you’ll find every recipe and every touch recreated here, offering a true step back to the 60’s and 70’s with retro-modern cocktails and throwback bar bites such as Fondue for Two or Chilled Shrimp Cocktail and chef-crafted canapes. As for Don Woods? A longtime Arizona real estate developer active in the 1950’s and beyond, Don held an office inside the building for decades, and the bar is a tribute to his work and his legacy in Arizona. Truly the only thing to change is the skyline, as viewed from the bar’s perch offering 270-degree city views.
On-site dining at ARRIVE Phoenix will be overseen by Director of Restaurants, Alex Resnick, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America who previously worked with “Top Chef Masters” winner Chris Cosentino, plus Bazaar by Jose Andres, and Red Medicine with Jordan Kahn (currently chef/owner of Vespertine and Destroyer in LA). Now in Uptown Phoenix, Resnick’s approach is to keep things simple, serving up “authentic, really well-executed food that just works. We’re not putting up a façade, we’re not over-concepting. Our goal is to offer straightforward, uncomplicated food that’s 100% focused on flavor, integrity and attention to detail.”
