Get Your Greer On At Molly Butler Lodge & Cabins

Like nearly every Phoenician, I enjoy escaping the heat of the concrete jungle we have come to know and love as Phoenix, Ariz. — even in October. I have logged thousands of miles traveling this great state, from Bisbee up to Kayenta; and no place is quite like Greer.

If you like history and want to unwind from the busy city life, Greer is the place for you. One of the most well-known persons associated with Greer is the famous Molly Butler, so it would make the most sense that I would stay at Molly Butler Lodge & Cabins — which happens to be one of Experience AZ’s Top 5 White Mountain Adventures.

On one Friday morning, I gathered my family, which included my in-laws, wife, daughter, cousin and three dogs; loaded up the SUV and headed northeast. But, don’t let the four-hour trip detract you; it is by far worth it.

I enjoy driving; it calms me. One of my favorite routes is along Highway 260. Not only are the mountains and wildlife very relaxing, but one of my favorite attributes about Highway 260 is that after you pass through Heber and are up on the rim, there are numerous turnoffs to have a secluded lunch in the pines. After about three and half hours of driving, you will pass by Sunrise Ski Park, and once you reach the turnoff for Sunrise, you’re almost to Greer. I suggest visiting in the fall to take advantage of the yellow, red and orange fall colors that can be seen everywhere. Soon enough, we reached Molly Butler Lodge.

Molly Butler Lodge & Cabins exudes good-ole-fashion hospitality and provides a pioneer atmosphere. It manages more than 50 unique cabins, and as a dog person, I am happy to report that many are pet friendly. Cabins range in size and can accommodate up to 18 people. Each cabin is individually owned but operated by Molly Butler Lodge. This provides you with a unique experience and leaves you with no corporate feeling. When you step into their cabins, it truly feels like your best friend let you borrow his place for the weekend.

Molly Butler Lodge is also famous for its prime rib, and the food definitely lives up to the hype. However, be prepared for service to be a little slow for that is the tune in Greer. Sit back, enjoy your cocktail, and spend quality time with your friends and family.

Greer is all about family and friends getting together to unwind from the busy city life. You won’t find a Walmart, Best Buy or any other sign of big-city commerce, and that is an awesome thing. You will find a couple cool spots like the Lazy Trout and Wonderland Park to shop and pick up a couple knick-knacks and gifts. As for the activities in Greer, they are endless. From horseback riding, star gazing, hiking and bike riding, to skiing, snowboarding and more, every season has something to offer in this great town.

My family and I will be talking about this trip for a long time, and I highly recommend a visit up north to “get your Greer on.”
