Marriages and civil unions in Malta are governed by the Marriage Act, Cap 255, which went into effect on August 12, 1975, and the Civil Unions Act, Cap 530, which went into force on April 14, 2014. Both acts were modified by Act XXIII of 2017, which took effect on September 1, 2017. The Marriage Registry was created on August 12, 1975, the same year that the Marriage Act was passed. In the Maltese Islands, the Act governs all weddings and civil unions.
Legal requirements before you tie the knot
You need to connect with the public registry approximately three months before the marriage ceremony. To initiate the process, you need to produce your passport.

Once this process is initiated, the registrar should be notified about a few important things mentioned below:

• Priest name and surname
