Flying with children can be a nightmare, but it doesn’t have to be. Here’s our guide to flying with toddlers for the first time so that you don’t have to learn these lessons the hard way.

1. Book Your Flight In Advance

The last thing you want to do is wait in line to buy tickets with a toddler at your hip. So, the wise thing to do is book your seats in advance. This will save you time and energy at the airport.

Some airlines allow toddlers under a certain age to fly for free. While that is a tempting offer, we recommend you go ahead and buy the extra seat or book the whole row. You will be grateful for the extra room for your kid to move around.

2. Choose the Time

What time the flight is makes a great deal of difference. When considering day vs night, there are a couple of things to note. If you play your cards right while planning a nighttime flight, your baby can sleep throughout the flight.

However, if they get disturbed by being on the plain, they might stay up, cranky for the whole night, disturbing you and the other fliers. Alternatively, for daytime flights, you must be prepared to keep the child or children entertained throughout the flight.

3. Packing For the Occasion

Packing for a flight with toddlers is much different from planning a regular flight. Some of the new things to consider include taking a stroller aboard the plane, making or buying a lot of snacks, new and old toys, and more.

Since you’re packing for a new travel companion, you can browse the Antler suitcase range available online for a bag with enough room. We recommend that you put all the baby stuff in a simple bag that would fit under the seat.

That way, you can reach it easily. Some airlines allow infants their own carry-on items, so you can pack some things in your baby’s backpack.

4. Direct Flight Vs. Layovers

You must choose if you want a direct flight or one with a layover. While the cost of the flight and your budget factor into this decision, you should know what impact bringing a toddler along has.

Direct flights may be quicker, but that means your children have to sit down for a long time without a break. After a certain point, it becomes unbearable for children to sit still. So if the flight is less than six hours, then it’s recommended to get it direct unless you should go for a layover flight.

In layovers, use the time for walking and entertainment. Some airports have playgrounds where your children can play and let out their pent-up energy. Opt for longer layovers. They are better since time flies with toddlers running around.

5. Boarding the Plane

When boarding the plane, choose to preboard flights. That way, you can arrange your bags and settle them in an empty or close-to-empty plane. Hygiene is imperative when it comes to toddlers, so be sure to wipe everything down once before settling down.

When it comes to entertaining your child for the whole flight, the first time is the easiest. The novelty of flying for the first time and being in an airplane keeps them busy. That wears off after a while so remember to bring familiar and new toys with you.
